In this conceptual assignment, the idea was to design an accommodation in a location of your choice. I chose the abandoned coal mine of Hasard in Liege. This site supplied tons of coal to Belgium and was closed in 1977. Nowadays, the Hasard coal mine is known for urban explorING

As a concept, I chose to work with 'fire'. on the one hand as a tribute to the coal mine and on the other hand to counteract the cold and chilly atmosphere of the site to create a contrast.
The concept was translated into the design and materialisation of the dwelling.
For the form, I was inspired by deconstructivism. The residence is in fact an abstracted flame.
In addition, the reflection of the sun on the copper plates creates a flame texture. this creates a symbolic flame on top of the shaft block of the coal mine.
Furthermore, in this project, much attention was again paid to perception and a large indoor-outdoor relationship in function of the environment and the target group.
For the lighting design, I worked together with Susanna Antico, architect and teacher at the KASK - School of arts.
